Are Slotted or Drilled Brake Rotors Actually Better?.
I've always been extremely skeptical of performance rotors, especially oem ones or oem-like ones that are just drilled and slotted and marked up $200 bucks. my issue with them is that they are weakening an oem rotor by drilling it. the company (including adams rotors, ecs, etc) does not redesign the internal vanes for more efficient cooling or additional structural enhancements. Having said that, rockauto has a kit by Powerstop which includes "11.1 in. Silver Zinc Plated Cross-Drilled And Slotted Rotors w/Z16 Ceramic Scorched Pads; Incl. Hardware" for about $105.... I found out that that 'hot ticket' didn't stop worth a &^% in city traffic. Seems they only worked well once you got them good and HOT. When braking, cross-drilled and slotted rotors tend to make noise. A small popping noise is normal, as this is the sound of the pad going over the slots/holes. Unless you have full race brakes, a squealing sound is not normal.... Are slotted rotors worth the extra money? Slotted rotors do not improve any heat transfer. However, the slots can.

Slotted rotors help keep the pad from glazing under high heat but the kind of high heat we are talking about won't be seen on the street unless you ride your brakes down a mountain (which you really shouldn't do). Drilled rotors are for weight reduction and looks. They crack easily at the drill points under heavy use so they aren't used on track.

If I didn't do any off-roading, I would be more inclined to go with the slotted ones. But I do, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience/knowledge of how slotted rotors do when taken off-road and mud slinging. Like you guys suggest as well, I wouldn't think they play well together. Jul 28, 2010. #5. The DBA slotted rotors were $125/ea, the EBC's retail for $275/ea. Here's a pic upon first installation. I just replaced the stock rotors with EBC slotted rotors and "green stuff" pads. The brakes work great - much better than my old worn out stock brakes. The problem I'm having is when breaking at a slow rate (say slowing from 20 to 0 at.

Without going into any of the technicalities it comes down to this: Blanks > * Slotted > Drilled Drilled = garbage. A good set of pads with the right compound for your application (be it street or track duty), fresh fluid (DOT4 or better) and a set of steel braided lines will do FAR more to improve your braking and decrease pedal effort than any "bling bling" rotors will ever get you. Slotted brake rotors are not without their disadvantages: They tend to have a shorter life compared with other types of brake rotors, and may shorten the life of brake pads as well. When you are coming to a stop from a high speed, you can feel a rumble from the rotors. They will still perform safely; you may just find the noise unpleasant.

Cryogenic treatment is a one-time stress relief process that involves both cold and heat cycling of the brake rotor. Using a proprietary computer-controlled process over a 24-hour period, the cryo machine gradually cools the rotors down to -300 ° F, then gradually brings them up to over +300° F, and finally back to room temperature.

Pros of Drilled and Slotted Rotors Help dissipate heat faster than standard rotors, improving braking performance Help keep the car’s brakes cooler, prolonging their life span Additionally, slots on slotted or drilled rotors increase their strength by balancing out circular loads with opposing forces on both sides of the center hole. These brakes are supposed to be heavy duty and made to withstand the riggers of towing. There is no way they should warp in 18000 miles. I had a Dodge dually that I towed a 15000 lbs 5er aprox. 20000 miles a year. Bought new and put 115000 miles on those rotors and they never warped. I only changed pads once. Turning your brake rotors is a complicated process. When it's done by a mechanic, it usually costs around $15-25 per rotor. That might sound cheap and affordable, but not when you consider that a new rotor will set you back around $20-30. This means that you might be able to save up to $15 per rotor when you turn them.

Rotors, calipers, and brake lines look great! I am having Centric drilled and slotted cryogenic treated rotor and posi-quiet pads installed this week. I just got fed up with the intermittent vibration especially severe vibration on hard stops. I am also having an RV6 performance J-Pipe installed as well. Given the choice between drill holes and slots, the drill holes will give you better braking power over slots for normal city/highway driving. This is why high end BMW, Porsche, Corvette, and Mercedes rotors are drilled, not slotted. However, for track racing (high speed stops), slotted rotors are the better choice. Cheap brake parts are not worth the time to bolt on. I used these folks in the past for a sedan. BTW the slotted rotors do make a whirring noise under hard braking....
